Safer Routes

How you take it changes the risk more than almost anything else you can control.

The same cannabis affects you very differently depending on how it gets into you: how fast it hits, how long it lasts, how easily you can judge a dose, and what it does to your lungs. Choosing the route deliberately is one of the most effective harm-reduction moves there is.

Vaporising beats smoking for your lungs

A dry-herb vaporiser heats ground flower hot enough to release the cannabinoids as vapour but without setting it alight, so you skip the combustion that makes tar and the worst of the irritants. UK health guidance treats it as lower-risk for the lungs than a joint. It's lower-risk, not risk-free. The practice is relatively new so the long-term evidence is still thin, and it does nothing about the effects of THC itself. But if you're going to keep using and want to be kinder to your lungs, it's one of the more meaningful switches you can make. The detail is in Vaping & Carts, including the important difference between a dry-herb vaporiser and an oil "cart".

Edibles: safer on the lungs, easier to overdo

Eating cannabis takes your lungs out of it entirely, which sounds like a pure win. But it swaps one risk for another. The onset is slow (30 minutes to two hours) and the effects last far longer, so the classic mistake is to take more before the first dose shows up and get hit by all of it at once. If you use edibles, start low, wait a full two hours before considering more, and treat any unlabelled homemade edible as an unknown dose. The full playbook, including what to do if you've overdone it, is in Edibles & Dosing.

The route to be most wary of

Illicit-market oil cartridges deserve singling out. Because the oil is sealed and opaque, you can't see what's in it: the concentration, what it's been cut with, or whether it's the brand it claims. Unregulated vape oils have been cut with dangerous additives, and that's exactly the kind of product behind the serious lung injuries of the 2019 EVALI outbreak. An illegal-market cart is one of the least predictable things you can put in your lungs. The one thing you most need to know, what's actually in the oil, is the one thing you can't check.

The trade-off, plainly

There's no single "safest" route, just different trade-offs. Vaporising flower is easiest on the lungs and easy to dose. Edibles spare the lungs but are easy to overdo and slow to take back. Smoking is the harshest but the easiest to titrate. Illicit carts are best avoided. Pick with the trade-off in mind rather than out of habit.
