Withdrawal Timeline
What to expect, day by day and week by week.
Cannabis withdrawal is real. For a long time people were told it wasn't, which left a lot of quitters blindsided and convinced something was wrong with them. There isn't. Knowing the shape of it, when things peak and when they fade, makes it far easier to sit through, because almost all of it is temporary and follows a fairly predictable arc.
Most of the discomfort is front-loaded into the first week. STRONGEvidence strength Cannabis withdrawal typically begins within 24–72 hours of stopping, peaks around days 2–6, and mostly resolves within one to two weeks, though sleep problems and low mood can run longer. Key source: Budney et al. (2004), American Journal of Psychiatry. The review that established cannabis withdrawal as a valid, clinically meaningful syndrome (now recognised in the DSM-5).
The symptoms, and what helps
Irritability, anger and anxiety. Usually the first to arrive and often the worst around days 2–4. You may feel wound up, snappy, on edge. It helps to warn the people around you, go easy on yourself, and burn some of it off with exercise or a walk.
Sleep problems and vivid dreams. The big one, and the reason it has its own section. Falling and staying asleep gets hard, and when you do sleep the dreams can be intense or unsettling. This can last longer than the rest, often two to four weeks.
Appetite loss. The reverse of the munchies. Food may not appeal for the first week or so. Eat lightly and regularly even if you're not hungry; it passes.
Cravings. Strongest in the first week, then arriving in waves rather than constantly. Each wave peaks and fades; you don't have to do anything except let it pass (see Cravings & Triggers).
Sweating, chills, headaches and vivid physical restlessness. Night sweats are common and harmless. Stay hydrated, keep cool, and ride it out.
If it helps to hear it plainly: none of this is dangerous, all of it is temporary, and the worst of it is measured in days, not months. The job of the first fortnight is simply to get through, and the rest of this spoke is about how.
